A blank thermostat screen is one of the last things you want to see when using your AC system. It keeps you from checking on the current temperature and prevents you from adjusting the settings. Before you worry, consider these reasons why we may see a thermostat with a blank screen.

No Power

Always check the power supply before you call for air conditioning services. Thermostats are usually wired through the HVAC system, but sometimes use batteries that provide backup power when a service interruption occurs. If the batteries are dead or the thermostat doesn’t get power through your electrical system, the screen will appear blank.

Blown Fuse

Homes that use fuses or circuit breakers can have thermostat issues when a fuse or circuit breaker is tripped. A similar problem happens when you trip the circuit breaker that powers the device. As it doesn’t receive any power, the screen becomes black.

Loose or Dirty Wires

To send alerts and signals to your system, the thermostat has wires inside that run to other parts of your home. If you recently worked around your home, the changes can dislodge and loosen one of the wires. Dirty connections on the wires are another issue that can affect the screen.

Tripped Switches

Your home may have a high-limit switch that trips when the system runs too hot. Some houses also have a float switch that trips when the moisture level gets too high in the drain pan. When one or both switches trip, it can cut the power to the thermostat and turn the screen off.

Low Brightness

Modern thermostats let you adjust the brightness of the display. Use the buttons on the thermostat to adjust the brightness. You can also aim a flashlight at the screen to spot the settings and see if the display is set too low.
