Ductless HVAC is an excellent comfort solution for your home in Piedmont, SC. However, if your ductless mini-split starts leaking water, it’s essential to identify and address the cause. Here are some of the most common reasons that a ductless AC can leak water.

An Extremely Dirty Air Filter

Each ductless mini-split air handler has its own washable air filter. The filter’s job is to keep dust and dirt away from the unit’s coil. If one of the air handler filters becomes too dirty, the air handler could begin to leak.

What’s happening is that the dirty filter obstructs airflow enough for the coil to ice over. Then, when the air handler turns off, the ice melts, allowing a leak to occur. If you clean the air handler’s air filter, the leak should stop.

A Clogged Condensate Drain

All air conditioners, including mini-splits, dehumidify air as a consequence of the cooling process. It happens as hot, humid air passes over the cold coil in a running air handler. Ordinarily, the condensation drips off the coil and drains outside via a condensate drain line.

If an air handler’s drain line clogs, the condensate will back up into the air handler. With nowhere left to go, it will eventually leak from the unit. Clearing the clog in the drain line should stop the leak.

A Cracked Drain Pan

Each air handler also relies on a drain pan to catch dripping condensation and route it to the drain line. If one of your air handlers develops a crack in its drain pan, the unit may leak water. To solve the problem, one of our HVAC technicians must replace the damaged drain pan with a new one.
