Installing a heat pump in your Easley, SC home is an excellent way to keep it cool in the summer. However, if it starts blowing hot air while in cooling mode, something’s wrong. Here are some of the most common reasons a heat pump might blow hot air in cooling mode.

A Thermostat Problem

A common reason for a heat pump to blow hot air in cooling mode is improper thermostat settings. For example, if someone accidentally switched your thermostat to heat mode, or turned the fan to “on” when it isn’t actively cooling, your system will produce warm air. So, before you assume your system is malfunctioning, double-check your thermostat.

A Clogged Air Filter

Your system requires unrestricted airflow to extract heat from the air in your home effectively. If its air filter gets too dirty, that can’t happen. In severe cases, it may even lead to a frozen indoor coil, further restricting airflow through the system.

To avoid this problem, replace your system’s air filter approximately every three months. If your home has pets or excessive dust, the filter may need more frequent replacement. Generally, if the air filter appears visibly dirty, it’s time for a replacement.

An Obstructed Outdoor Unit

When your heat pump runs in cooling mode, it depends on its outdoor unit to expel heat. If there’s anything blocking airflow through the outdoor unit, your system will blow hot air. At a minimum, ensure there are about two feet of unobstructed space around your outdoor unit.

Another important element is the condition of the fins on your heat pump’s outdoor coil. If they accumulate too much dirt, they can’t do their job. To correct the problem, you’ll need a heat pump maintenance visit from one of our HVAC technicians.
